Below are some small programs which can be very helpful when troubleshooting your system. Warning: Use these tools at your own risk. Computer Solutions MG assumes no responsibility for any undersireable effects that the use of these programs might have on your system. Bottom line: if you don't know what you're doing, call someone who does.

whatinstartup.exe - The What'sInStartUp utility displays a list of all applications that are loaded automatically when Windows boots.

hijackthis.exe - HijackThis examines certain key areas of the Registry and Hard Drive and lists their contents. These are areas which are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers. It's up to you to decide what should be removed. Some items are perfectly fine. You should not remove them. Never remove everything. Doing that could leave you with missing items needed to run legitimate programs and add-ins. Improper use of HijackThis can leave your system inoperable. If you are going to use this program and don't fully understand what it does and what effects its use could have on your computer, this website is a good place to visit for detailed help.

processviewer.exe - The ProcessViewer utility is a much more detailed version of the Task Manager that is built in to Windows. The level of detail it provides can often be enough to help you ferret out undesirable processes that are running on your system.

ccleaner.exe - The CCleaner utility is a system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system and cleans traces of your online activity such as your cookies and internet history. For a more in-depth description, please see here.

foldersreport.exe - The FoldersReport utility scans a drive or a base folder that you select, and displays essential information for each folder that it finds: The size of all files inside the folder, The real files size on the disk, number of files inside the folder, number of hidden files, number of compressed files, and number of subfolders. You can use this utility to easily find out which folders use the most space in your drive.

winsockxpfix.exe - This utility has been known to restore the ability of a computer to successfully connect to the internet. For details on exactly what it does, click here. Note that upon completion, it will re-start your computer, so you should close all open programs and documents prior to running winsockxpfix.exe.

wntipcfg.exe - This is a Windows NT-based version of the popular winipcfg utility which was native to Windows 98 and 95. It will work in Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003 Server.
