How to Make Labels with Microsoft Word
- It’s easiest to buy the labels that come on 8 ½ by 11 sheets.
- Open Microsoft Word
- Click TOOLS, ENVELOPES & LABELS (or click the “Envelopes and Labels” button on the toolbar if you see one.)
- If the “Envelopes” tab is selected, click the “Labels” tab. If the “Labels” tab is already selected, that’s the way it needs to be so do nothing for this step.
- Click the OPTIONS button.
- In the list under “Product Number”, find and select the number which corresponds to the labels you are using. In the example picture below, I have purchased Avery #5766 (“File Folder”) Labels, so that’s what I have highlighted.
- Click the OK button.

- Now click the “New Document” button. You will then get a full page with the labels outlined for you to type in.
- To make it easiest in the future, once you’ve done Steps #1 through 8 above for one particular type of label, you can save the blank document for future use. To do this, simply click FILE, SAVE AS and name it something like “File Folder Labels”. Then in the future when you want to make File Folder labels, all you have to do is open the file that you saved previously (called “File Folder Labels” in my example.) Note that if you purchase a different type of labels, such as Return Address Labels, you will have to do Steps #1 – 8 above for each different type of label that you use.
